At Good Business Colorado, our board members are more than advisors, they're small business owners, advocates, and connectors who bring real-world experience to everything we do. In this series, we're sitting down with some of the people shaping GBC's direction to learn what drives them, what they're hoping to build for Colorado's small business community, and a little bit about who they are outside of the workspace.
Meet Jervis DiCicco, a GBC member for four years who has also served on our policy council and is a recipient of several awards including, GBCA’s ‘The Rock Award’. Jervis brings a deep commitment to inclusive economic policy, using his role at GBC to help move Colorado toward a business landscape where small businesses get the support and access they deserve.
Read on to hear his thoughts on what an inclusive Colorado economy could look like and where you might find him on his day off.
1. What drew you to join our board, and why does this work matter to you personally?
GBC gives me the opportunity to directly participate in the political process and help move Colorado to being a more inclusive economy. Right now, small businesses face more challenges and get less support than larger ones, and historically underutilized businesses have an even harder road. GBC helps me find resources to close that gap AND help move policy in a more inclusive direction.
2. What do you hope to see for small business owners, in the next few years?
My sincere hope--and I believe it's possible--is that Colorado is leading the way on empowering small businesses and building an inclusive economy. To me, this means policies and resources that empower profitability and relieve administrative burdens, increase access and affordability of sustainable business practices, and help leaders invest in their people and share success through vehicles like employee ownership. Improving access to capital, bidding opportunities, and more transparency around things like emissions and human capital practices are important to me. If done right, policy and practices will close wealth gaps, build community wealth, and create an economy that works for everyone.
3. Outside of board work, what's something people might be surprised to learn about you?
I love caving! Exploring caves, vertical ropework, and scrambling around in the dark is fun for me. I'm also a soccer coach and used to host a radio show.
