Small businesses make up 75% of our state’s employers and of these, more than two-thirds are unable to provide health insurance to their employees, according to a 2020 report by the Colorado Health Institute. At the same time, small business owners identified healthcare costs as the second biggest barrier to maintaining or growing their businesses according to a recent poll by Small Business Majority. Access to affordable, comprehensive coverage is out of reach for many small businesses, which makes it difficult to attract and retain talented employees.
